One of the numerous events part of Sorrento’s “M’Illumino d’Inverno” Winter Festival you just can’t miss is New Year’s.

On New Year’s Eve, December 31st, there’s an early night-out full of shows and entertainment for children and adults scheduled in Piazza Tasso, the main square in Sorrento’s historic center.

“Ciuccio di Fuoco” (Flaming Donkey), one of the most characteristic folkloristic traditions in the City, is a MUST.

In fact, every December 31st right before midnight, it is customary to light the “flaming donkey” in the town’s main square. A particularly impressive display followed by the usual fireworks marking the arrival of the New Year.

Its most likely origin is that the ciuccio di fuoco in Sorrento refers to an ancient farmers’ custom. In ancient times, in fact, farmers would have lighted a hay stack as a way of driving off evil spirits.

The lighting “ceremony” in the Piazza Tasso is always accompanied by a characteristic, symbolic and ironic procession.

From 11:00pm to 2:00am, the Piazza rings in the New Year with a DJ and entertainment. A fun way to say goodbye to the old and say hello to the new with good cheer and music, emotions and hope.

From the port’s wharf, at 1:00am on January 1st, an exciting fireworks show lights the night’s sky.
